Why Some Devices Are Not Supported

Different Firmware Platforms

EdgeRouter/EdgeSwitch devices run on EdgeOS, a completely different operating system from Unifi OS. These devices are managed through a web interface or CLI, not the Unifi Network Controller. They were designed for advanced users who need routing features beyond what Unifi OS provides.

Alternative Management Systems

AirMAX devices (including AirFiber, sector antennas, and stations) use UNMS/UISP (Unifi Network Management System), a separate platform designed for WISP operators. These devices run AirOS firmware and cannot be adopted by Unifi Network Controller.

Hardware Appliance Dependencies

Unifi Talk, Connect, and Access require local hardware appliances to function:

  • Talk needs a Talk application host (UDM-Pro/SE, UNVR, or Cloud Key)
  • Connect requires Connect Display or LED panels with local control
  • Access requires the Access Hub hardware for door control

These services cannot run purely on hosted controllers without the supporting local infrastructure.

Legacy Product Replacements

Unifi Video was Ubiquiti's original camera NVR system, completely replaced by Unifi Protect. Video NVR hardware and software are end-of-life and incompatible with modern Protect systems.

mFi sensors and controllers were deprecated years ago and receive no firmware updates or controller support.

Technical Limitations

Third-party devices lack the Unifi discovery protocols and controller integration required for adoption. They cannot communicate with Unifi Network Controller.

Layer 2 discovery devices rely on local network broadcast traffic to find controllers. Remote hosted controllers operate at Layer 3 (IP routing), making L2 discovery impossible across networks. These devices require direct SSH adoption or DHCP/DNS configuration instead.

L3 Adoption Methods

For remote hosted controllers, devices must be adopted via Layer 3 methods:

  1. DHCP Option 43 — Configure your local DHCP server with the controller IP
  2. DNS method — Set unifi DNS record pointing to controller
  3. SSH adoption — Direct SSH into device and run set-inform command
  4. Mobile app — Use Unifi Network mobile app for initial setup

Notes

  • All Unifi OS consoles (UDM, UDR, UCG) can connect to hosted controllers when configured in bridge/AP mode
  • Protect cameras require local Protect hardware (UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, UNVR, or Cloud Key Gen2 Plus)
  • Access control requires local Access hardware
