How to delete a site in your UniFi Controller: A step by step guide

Published onby Dries (edited on by Iron)

Managing your UniFi network involves various tasks, and sometimes you may find yourself needing to delete a site from your UniFi Controller.

Whether it's for business purposes, troubleshooting, or just starting fresh, it's important to understand how to do this properly.

In this post, we'll walk you through the process step by step.

🚨 Before we dive in, please don't self-host your UniFi Controller if you take care of client networks. Sooner or later this will cause issues! It's fine for home users, but definitely not recommended for IT service businesses and MSPs. If you want secure, reliable and a scalable hosting solution check out UniHosted.

Understanding the Process

Before you start, you should know that deleting a site from the UniFi Controller is irreversible. This action will permanently erase all data, settings, and configurations associated with the site. Make sure you ran a backup before proceeding.

Another thing to know is that you can't delete the default site. It has some special status within the UniFi Network Application. We recommend keeping the default website as in and don't use it at all. Just keep it as an empty site in your UniFi Network Application.

Access the UniFi Controller

Log in to your UniFi Controller at your-controller.unifi.unihosted.com or ui.com. This can be done through the web interface of the UniFi Network application. Make sure that you have the admin rights to delete sites.

Where to find the

Where to find the "Delete Site" button?

  1. Once logged in, go to the Site Switcher at the top of the sidebar on the left. Select the site that you want to delete. Remember, you can't delete the default site.
  2. Click the Settings Cog at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  3. Select System and there you have it, Delete Site at the bottom of the page (next to 'Export Site').
  4. Make sure to create a backup of the UniFi Network Application and sites!
  5. Hit the Delete Site button and you will see this confirm screen:

  6. After that, you will be directed to another site.

Don't see the "Delete Site" button? Then you're probably on the default site. We can't say this enough.

Final Checks

The system deleted the site and all settings with it. The site is permanently deleted from your UniFi Network Application (formerly UniFi Controller).

Final Thoughts

Deleting a site in UniFi Controller is pretty straightforward (if you don't delete the default site). Just always make sure you have a backup of your site configurations and that you are deleting the correct site.
