Top Three Hubox Alternatives

Published onAugust 23, 2023

Setting up UniFi networks with multiple devices is a tedious task. To ensure everything runs smoothly for you (or your clients), you must test and apply updates, create backups, and ensure the servers are secure.

UniFi cloud hosting services take the work out of your hands: Installation, updates, scaling, and backups are done for you.

A few companies are offering “do-it-for-you” network hosting. One of the more established companies in this field is Hubox. However, it might be worthwhile to check out some other options.

Table of Contents

Hubox

Regarding cloud-hosted UniFi controller services, Hubox is a household name. They claim they manage over 3000 clients (which would mean they are a big fish, if true).

The problem, however, is that there is not much info about them. You can’t find any customer reviews or third-party information that suggests they are reliable. This is not because they are a new business. They have been in the space for quite a long time.

Moreover, they don’t seem to have a social presence, which I don’t find very convincing. In addition, we did some due diligence and found that some of their servers are not correctly configured, and some are still running on legacy software.

Why look for a Hubox alternative?

You should be searching for an alternative to Hubox for a few reasons. In their defense, they have been around for quite some time, although it just doesn’t appear like that.

Apart from the fact that you can’t find any reviews, it appears that some of their servers haven’t been updated and run on legacy software. This can be very dangerous.

Who Are the Alternatives?

The alternative market is quite thin, to be honest. We could only find a few notable companies offering hosted UniFi controller solutions. Most are keen to battle it out over price tags, but it's not just about the cost.

When you are an IT service provider managing multiple clients, you should definitely be looking for reliability and great support.

UniHosted

UniHosted is a solid alternative to Hubox. It’s an affordable cloud hosting service that handles all your UniFi controller needs, including automation, backups, monitoring system upgrades, and round-the-clock support.

The biggest pro is its free plan. UniHosted is very new in the space, so they offer a free plan to test their service. It’s the only cloud hosting solution with the free plan feature.

Testing UniHosted for free to see if it meets your standards is the perfect option to try a cloud solution without paying a dime.

Ups:

  • Reliable and efficient
  • Includes testing, updates, backups and security
  • Offers a free plan
  • Comprehensive customer support

Downs:

  • UniHosted is relatively new, so not that famous—yet!

Pricing:

UniHosted's pricing plans cater to various businesses, kicking off at $50 a month. This is the same price as Hubox but with more reliability. The pricing also works on a “pay-as-you-go” basis; you’ll only pay for the number of devices you actually use. You are not boxed into a specific plan.

As mentioned, UniHosted is also the only cloud solution provider with a free tier.

HostiFi

HostiFi is probably the most established cloud-hosting solution in the space. They're excellent at setting up UniFi controllers, ensuring things run smoothly, and providing great customer support.

Their main issue is their pricing. The price tag starts at a $99 monthly fee for 250 devices. There is just no cheaper plan. Plus, they don't do free plans. While HostiFi is arguably one of the better solutions, you could ask yourself, does cloud hosting need to be this expensive?

Pros:

  • Reliable, comprehensive service
  • Great customer support
  • Established company

Cons:

  • No free plan
  • Three times as expensive as UniHosted

Pricing:

As mentioned above, it’s the priciest above in the cloud-hosting space. HostiFi has been the go-to solution for a long time, starting their offering at a $99 rate for 250 devices. No cheaper option is available, meaning their service is expensive, especially if you only have a few devices.

Also, if you are an IT service provider and need to upgrade, there is a steep jump from $99 monthly to $249, setting you back $2,500 per year if you choose the yearly plan.

You should consider options as reliable as HostiFi but for a more reasonable price.

Cloud UniFi

Cloud UniFi has been in the market for more than nine years and boasts dedicated hosting for the controllers with servers in both the US and Europe.

It's also difficult to find a lot of information about them. They don’t have a social presence but seem to be doing a good job. They state that they test before updating, which is a good sign.

I would say their offering is similar to Hubox (but without the vulnerabilities). However, it's unclear who is behind Cloud UniFi. There are not many reviews, which seems to be a bit off for a company that has been in business for more than nine years.

Pros:

  • Testing updates
  • Cheap options

Cons:

  • No free plan
  • No reviews and social presence
  • Not as reliable as UniHosted and HostiFi

Pricing:

Like Hubox and HostiFi, Cloud UniFi doesn’t offer a free plan. UniHosted is the only cloud solution that does. Their prices start at $15. In comparison, HostiFi’s offering starts at $99 and UniHosted at $39. It's unclear if you have a dedicated or shared server for $15.

Again, and this is just like what we found at Hubox, it seems to be a bit off that they don’t have any social presence or reviews. For a company that is this long in business, that’s not what you want. There is actually no third-party confirming they are doing a fantastic job.

Cloud Hosting vs. DIY

Choosing a cloud-hosting service over the DIY method can be a major game-changer. Yes, the DIY way can feel empowering, but it's a time sucker and demands constant software updates.

Instead, cloud-hosting services offer:

  • Automated UniFi Device Setup: Less trouble with manual setups.
  • Network Performance Optimization: Say hello to maximum uptime and network efficiency.
  • Scalable Network Management: Grow as you like without hardware hassles.
  • Automated Network Troubleshooting: Spend less time on network issues.
  • Security and Compliance: Sleep easy with top-grade security measures and compliance coverage.

If you are still debating whether to do it yourself or use a cloud-hosting solution, trying UniHosted’s free plan is the easiest option. It is as expensive as setting it up yourself—namely zero, but it gives you all the benefits over DIY.

Final Thoughts

In the landscape of Hubox alternatives, UniHosted is the name that stands out. It's got a competitive pricing structure, comprehensive services, and even a free plan! It matches up to Hubox's service quality and one-ups it by being an affordable and dependable solution for all your UniFi controller needs.
